Love is Like a Garden

Love is like a garden.
It takes work.
It gives beauty.
It bears fruit.

Faith is like a seed.
Hope is like a blossom.
Love is like springtime and harvest.

Love is like a garden.
It takes work.
It gives beauty.
It bears fruit.

Ruth, Charlotte, NC April 2001

A nice little article and photo in The Charlotte Observer brought back sweet memories from a too-short first visit to the Glen in peak bloom last year with my mother. I drove to UNCC to visit the Glen on April 26, 2001 and discovered the adjacent Susie Harwood Garden, popped in for a quick look, and spent my entire time there. The only thing to do was to come back, and my next photo opportunity came on April 29th.

The Van Landingham Glen on the University of North Carolina - Charlotte campus allows visitors to see native plants of the Carolinas. Ralph Van Landingham founded the rhododendron garden in 1966 through generous donations, and through diligent work Dr. Herbert Hechenbleikner developed it into a collection of native plants of the Carolinas. A thousand species of indigenous trees, shrubs, wildflowers, and ferns from across the Carolinas -- from the Mountains to the Sea -- now grow among 3000 rhododendrons, about 100 of which are natives.

The UNC -- Charlotte Botanical Gardens consist of the Van Landingham Glen, the Susie Harwood Garden, and the McMillan Greenhouse. For more information, contact Dr. Larry Mellichamp, Coordinator, at 704/547-4055.
